ORTOGAMI
A basket for organic produce, designed to minimize material usage, it’s made through folding and cuts without any waste. Ortogami enhances the organic aspect by taking inspiration from the picnic basket to evoke the feeling of handpicking fruits and vegetables in nature. The name comes from the combination of ‘Orto’; Italian for vegetable garden and ‘Origami’.
Mention of Honour (2020)
Product Description
Ortogami, the project of my team partner Elettra Pignatti and I, received the Mention of Honour at Rilegno Contest. Rilegno is an Italian company that recycles wooden packaging. The photo was taken at the awards ceremony in Milan. The brief of the contest was to develop the new basket for organic produce of the future, designed to be produced on an industrial scale.
The young poplar wood allows flexibility and folding without additional processes. It’s then held in place with eco-friendly solvent-free glue. The handles flex enough to allow a perfect grip and when baskets are stacked they prevent slipping. The ‘excess’ wood of the handles is folded inside to allow stacking of other containers, as well as protecting the content inside.
